Welcome, whiskey enthusiasts, to The Colonel's Cask blog! I'm thrilled to finally share this passion project with you. Before we dive into the rich history, complex science, and delightful tastings that await us on the podcast, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share the journey that led me to become "The Colonel."
From Service to Spirits
My path to the world of whiskey might seem a little unconventional, but it's deeply rooted in dedication and a commitment to service. I proudly served our country in the U.S. Army for three years. That time instilled in me a sense of discipline and purpose that I carry into every endeavor.
Even after my military service, my commitment to country and my fellow veterans never wavered. I'm honored to be a Kentucky Colonel, a distinction awarded for my ongoing dedication to service. Much of this has been through my work with my non-profit, Vets Helping Vets Colorado, and my extensive volunteer efforts with incredible organizations like The DAV (Disabled American Veterans), VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and the American Legion. These experiences have shaped who I am and fuel my desire to bring communities together—much like a good pour of whiskey does!
A Scholar of the Still
My love affair with whiskey isn't just a casual hobby; it's a profound dedication that has led me down many educational paths. I've invested countless hours in understanding the intricacies of this magnificent spirit, and I'm proud to hold multiple degrees from Whiskey University. This includes a Bachelor's Degree in Rye Whiskey, and two Master's Degrees: one in Craft Whiskey and another, reflecting my particular passion, in Rye Whiskey again.
To further solidify my expertise, I am also an Executive Bourbon Steward with the prestigious Stave & Thief Society. This certification is a testament to a deep understanding of bourbon, from grain to glass. Beyond formal education, I'm an active member of numerous bourbon and whiskey clubs and societies. This keeps me connected to the latest trends, historical insights, and, of course, some incredible people who share this passion.
